UMass Boston / University Hall
Boston, Massachusetts
University Hall is the academic centerpiece of the UMass Boston campus, designed to champion interdisciplinary learning. It intentionally integrates the Art, Performing Arts, and Chemistry departments alongside general-purpose classrooms under a single roof. This unique blend of arts and sciences reinforces the university’s commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education, fostering visibility, interaction, and collaboration across diverse disciplines.
The design weaves diverse programmatic elements. For example, a piano studio is placed near the chemistry labs. These elements break out and overlook the Boston skyline and the Boston harbor, emphasizing the unique waterfront setting.
Beyond its state-of-the-art academic spaces, University Hall serves as the vibrant community hub of the Umass Boston campus. Dynamic public areas complement the classrooms, including a 500-seat auditorium, a theater, a recital hall, an exhibition gallery, a lounge, and food service for 11,000 coverage/day.
Connecting these functions is the striking central atrium, which offers spectacular views of Boston Harbor and acts as a major circulation hub for the campus. Built with state-of-the-art sustainable design strategies, University Hall is an inclusive, forward-thinking environment that serves all UMass Boston students and the broader community.
