Northeastern University / Digital Media Commons

Boston, Massachusetts

Located at the heart of Northeastern University’s campus, the Snell Library underwent a revolutionary transformation to become the Digital Media Commons (DMC). This project replaced traditional book stacks to establish a cutting-edge flexible learning environment that champions digital creation, collaboration, design, and analysis.

The DMC’s innovative model is supported by a diverse array of resources, including 3D printing labs, an innovation center, and professional audio/video/post-production studios. The success of this integrated facility was rooted in a collaborative effort that united key decision-makers across the Library, Information Technology Services, and the College of Arts, Media and Design. The project was initiated by the provost Dean Director, in order to centralize digital resources. The joint user client consisted of the University’s IT and library services. This unique combination operates the facility and provides a united face to the students.

Architectural and Programmatic Reimagining

The design strategy maximized student access to high-value spaces. Classrooms were consolidated into a dedicated wing, and staff offices were relocated, clearing the way for a signature 10,000 SF open-plan ground floor commons. This space now provides a robust infrastructure for high-density computing and serves as a dynamic hub for student activity.

The DMC fosters a cooperative setting for a full range of interdisciplinary work, providing students with facilities for advanced graphics and content creation, and offering faculty technical guidance on digital scholarship and media integration methodologies. It repurposed the central Snell library into a powerful environment, effectively re-thinking the established academic experience emilto support digital media on campus.
